15 – 35 km above your head

The invisible shield
that lets life exist

A film of three-atom oxygen, thinner — relatively — than the skin of an apple. It absorbs the Sun's harshest light so that everything below can flourish.

I — Vertical Voyage

The sky, floor by floor

One meteorologist's stratosphere is another astronaut's lobby. Wander upward through the layers of the atmosphere — and find where the ozone glows.

0–8 km Troposphere Where weather lives. Clouds, wind, rain — and all of us.
8–50 km Stratosphere Home of the ozone layer — ~90% of Earth's ozone is parked here. You are here, shield
50–85 km Mesosphere Meteors meet their match and burn — halting at ~85 km.
85 km+ Thermosphere Auroras ignite. The ISS orbits at ~400 km, surfing the airless light.
II — By the Numbers

Small enough to miss,
mighty enough to save

0%
of all atmospheric ozone lives in the stratosphere
0%
of Sun's UV-B radiation absorbed before reaching the ground
0 atoms
of oxygen per molecule — O₃, a whisper of chemistry
0 mm
of pure ozone, compressed, would wrap the whole planet
III — The Chemistry

Four steps, running
a billion times a second

The Chapman cycle: sunlight builds ozone, sunlight unbuilds it, and the planet ends up wearing sunscreen.

1
O2 + UV → 2O
High-energy sunlight cracks ordinary oxygen apart.
2
O + O2 → O3
A free oxygen atom adopts a partner — ozone is born.
3
O3 + UV → O2 + O
Ozone soaks up deadly UV and quietly splits again.
4
O3 + O → 2O2
The cycle closes. Sunscreen for a planet, self-rolling.

IV — The Story

A hole discovered,
a promise kept

1974

The warning

Molina & Rowland publish that CFCs — the gases in every fridge and spray can — devour ozone. Industry scoffs.

1985

The hole appears

Farman's team in Antarctica measures springtime ozone down by 40%. The sky has a wound the size of a continent.

1987

The treaty

The Montreal Protocol — the first treaty ever ratified by every UN country — phases out CFCs worldwide.

2016

Signs of healing

NASA's Suomi and Aura satellites confirm: the hole is shrinking for the first time. The ozone shield is growing back.

~2066

Full recovery (projected)

If we keep the promise, the Antarctic ozone hole returns to its 1980 benchmark — a healed sky for a healed humankind.
